German painter and etcher, born in Wildenfels, Saxe, on June 26, 1788; died in Munich on March 4, 1868. Vogel studied at the Dresden Academy. In 1808 he traveled to St. Petersburg, where he worked for four years as portrait painter for the Baron von Lowenstern. In 1813 he visited Prague and Vienna, and then traveled to Italy, where he remained until 1820. He traveled to Paris in 1830 and to London in 1834. In 1842 he returned to Italy, remaining until 1844. By 1853 he had returned to the Dresden Academy to teach. No catalogues or biographies make any reference to Vogel working as an etcher in Paris during the years the aquatints for Travels were produced (1836-42). However, up to this point, no other likely artist has come to light in any of the research.
