Show 258 Manceau, Alexandre Damien: (French, 1817-1865) Vignette XXVI, The Travellers Meeting with Minatarre Indians near Fort Clark Tableau 18, Bison-Dance of the Mandan Indians French engraver, dramatist, and secretary to George Sand. Born in Trappes (Seine-et-Oise), May 3, 1817; died in Palaiseau, August, 1865. Student of Sixdeniers, Manceau reproduced the works of artists including Murat, Matout, Guillemin, P. Delaroche, Schopin, Dedreux, and H. Vernet. Book illustration included fifty plates for Masques et Bouffons. comedie italienne by Maurice Sand, published in 1860. Martens, Fr6de>ic: (French,1809-1875 ) Vignette I, Boston Lighthouse French artist and aquatint etcher, born about 1809 in Paris; died in Paris in 1875. Of German extraction, Martens etched views of many of the principal Euorpean cities, including Paris, Frankfurt, Coblenz, Cologne, Havre, Lausanne, Mainz, Orleans, Rouen, Stuttgart, Trieste, and Venice. Martens illustrated the book Principales vues de Paris et des ses environs. Paris: Schmidt, 1832, which contained fifty-four plates and an engraved title page. Outhwaite, John (Jean Jacques): (French, f1.1836-1877) Vignette IX, Tower-Rock view of the Mississippi Vignette XXIII, Encampment of the travellers on the Missouri French engraver, born in London. A student of E. Goodall, Outhwaite moved to Paris and exhibited in the salons between 1836 and 1877. Outhwaite became a naturalized French citizen in 1855. Book illustration includes plates for Histoire de France, by Anquetil / Lacroix, Paris, and vignettes for Histoire de Paris et de ses monuments, by Dulaure, new edition by Batissier, Paris, 1846. |
