Show 136 inferior in quality to Bodmer's aquatints and would not appear until 1840, Maximilian had undoubtedly let friendship interfere with sound publishing strategy. 46. This third edition, Naturgeschichte und Abbildungen des Menschen der vershiedenen Racen und Stamme. included even more of Bodmer's works and is evidence of the popularity of the more modest travelbooks. See Appendix E, Chronology, for a complete listing of Bodmer's illustrations for the second and third editions of Schinz's Natural History. 47. See Appendix B, Etchers, for a complete list. 48. Acta 1, nos. 8-9. 49. It was standard publishing strategy to offer the best and most elaborate prints to subscribers in the first issues of such publications, in order to attract new subscribers and to encourage current subscriptions to continue. One of the best prints, a portrait of Mato-Tope (Tableaus 14), was among the aquatints included in this first issue. 50. Maximilian approved of Bodmer's suggestion to incorporate action scenes into the landscapes, from which it might be concluded that he believed the information was essentially correct. Although Tableau 27, Scalp Dance. did not have a landscape as background, the accuracy with which Bodmer composed this aquatint should be recalled. Other prints with landscape backgrounds-Tableau 26, Winter Village of the Minatarres. Tableau 28, Fort Union on the Missouri. Tableau 42, Fort McKenzie. and Tableau 43, Encampment of the Piekann Indians, for example-vary in their degree of accuracy and must be examined individually to determine their documentary validity. The landscape backgrounds themselves, however, successfully place the compositions in accurate context. 51. This was not the case before the original watercolors were rediscovered and examined. Early ethnologists studying the prints without the means of comparing the information in the aquatints with the original watercolors were at a disadvantage. 52. There is a variant state of this print that has the misspelled title of The White Castels and that is also dated. |
