Show 121 Production Problems: Third State of Tableau 37 The third state of Tableau 37 is dated January 1, 1839. Present in this state are four additional antelope that appear on the left island and an extra bird inserted into the top center image. The etching needle has been used to redefine the remaining birds. The river has been reworked with horizontal parallel lines, while the white outcropping on the hills to the right and the castles themselves have been defined with vertical parallel lines. The lower left foreground has also been further enhanced with the etching needle. Some of this extensive reworking was probably necessary as the copperplate was worn down by heavy use. Problems with the colored plates may also have occurred with Tableau 37, since the first of these were not shipped to Holscher until April of 1839, over four months later.67 Many of the production problems involved the colored prints, which were almost invariably shipped after the black and white and chine colle impressions. Several times these colored prints were put into the finishing press before they were sufficiently dry. Fusing together, some of the prints were total losses; others required extensive repair and retouching of the colors before they could be shipped. The handcolored impression of the third state of Tableau 37 held by the University of Utah shows such a repair. In the upper right section of the image a small area of the paper has been damaged and has been skillfully inpainted. This problem continued to haunt Bodmer well into the project. Almost all of the colored prints for the ninth and tenth issues were adhered together because of this problem. Because of deadlines, Bodmer was forced to send Holscher all of the prints for these |
