Show 252 Allais, Jean Alexandre: (French, 1792-1850) Tableau 45. Mehkskeme-Sukahs. Blackfoot Chief French artist, etcher (aquatint and mezzotint), and engraver, born March 29, 1792 in Paris; died November 9, 1850, also in Paris.1 Son of the engraver Louis-Jean Allais, Allais was a student of L. David and the engravers Urbain Massard and Fossoyeux, whose daughter he married. According to Hind, Allais was influenced by the work of Frangois Janinet, who had introduced the method of color-printed aquatint into France in the late eighteenth century. Allais' mezzotints were particularly well received; mezzotints were very popular during the reign of Louis-Philippe. Beginning in 1819, Allais exhibited in the Paris salons. His works include excellent reproductions of the paintings of Boilly, DaVinci, Deveria, Dubufe, Ducis, Duval Le Camus, Fragonard, Grenier, Jacquand, Robert-Fleury, and others. Aubert, (pere), Pierre-Eugene: (French, 1788-1847) Vignette XXXII, Cleveland Lighthouse on the Lake Erie Tableau 30, Tombs of Assiniboin Indians on Trees French etcher and engraver, born August 17, 1789 in Paris; died in Paris in April 1847.2 A student of Scheuder, Aubert exhibited in the Paris salons beginning in 1827. He reproduced the works of famous artists including Ruysdael and Joseph Vernet. His best work is View at Samboanaa in the island of Mindanoa. published by Goupil & Co . Aubert also engraved Ulysses and Nausicaa. after the picture by Rubens in the Aguado Gallery.
