An analysis of Tableau 25 rests primarily upon changes made in the image as a document-what was lost, added, or reintroduced. The reasons behind these changes reveal Bodmer's artistic process. However, this method of examination demonstrates clearly that groundrules for the analysis must be established, as problems quickly become evident. Defining the Methodology: Is it a Document or is it Art? Distinctions between the Watercolors and the Aquatints Just what is being analyzed? If Bodmer's works, either the watercolors or the aquatints, are to be examined as ethnological documents, the discussion must hinge upon criteria independent from that imposed, if either are to be judged as works of art. These separate lines of inquiry have sometimes become confused. Recently, much has been made of the superiority of the watercolors over the aquatints.
