Pr6vost, Zach6e: (French, 1797-1861) Tableau 8, Wahk-Ta-Ge-Li. A Sioux Warrior French engraver and etcher in aquatint and mezzotint, born in Paris, June 21, 1797; died in April of 1861, in Paris. A student of Regnault and Bervic, Prevost's first large work, which established his reputation, was Corinne. after Gerard. Prevost exhibited in the Paris salons from 1822 to 1857, receiving a metal second class in 1828 and a first class medal in 1839. About 1830, Prevost broke with the academic community and began etching in aquatint, executing several plates after Leopold Robert and Delacroix. By 1835, Prevost was well-known political and social satirist, who, along with artists such as Daumier, Grandeville and Gavarni, illustrated Paris' popular magazines. In 1852, PreVost returned to line engraving and exhibited a large plate of the Marriage of Cana. after the painting by Paul Veronese in the Louvre and published by Goupil & Co.; he was awarded a medal of the Legion of Honor for this work. A Minatarre or big-bellied Indian French etcher (aquatint and photogravure) and lithographer, born in Paris, June 23, 1821; died in Charenton on April 10, 1859. Riffaut was a student of J. Collignon, L. Marvy, E. Giraud and A. Collin. Between 1840 and 1853 his illustrations were published in the magazine L'Artiste. His works included reproductions of artists such as Muller, Philippoteaux, Leloir, Gue, Lehmann, Guinet, Glaize, Diaz, and Decamps. Book illustration included ten plates for Vovage en Crimee. by Demidoff, in 1854, and Portriats de Personnaaes Francais les plus Illustres de XVIe Siecle. 1848-1857. In 1850 Riffaut successfully used the process of photogravure to reproduce illustrations for La R6publique democratique. travail, fraternite. commerce, allegorie. Riffaut also produced one illustration for the book Oeuvres de Moliere. published in 1860. |
