H6lscher London published by Ackermann & Co.96 Strand, Jan^. 1 sti839 Paris, Arthus Bertrand.editeur first state: aquatint / etching (slight), etcher: Frederic Martens upper inscriptions: yes titles: German, French, English. lower inscriptions: yes dated: no locations: University of Utah la, II; Joslyn Museum I. second state: dated: Janv. 1st. 1839. image: heavily reworked with etching needle. locations: University of Utah III; Joslyn Museum IV, V, VI, restrikes VII, VIII, XIII; New berry English atlas. variant states: no "imprimatur" or etcher's name; English title only; no lower inscriptions; no date. In place of the upper right inscription is a penciled signature "C. Bodmer". This print has been cut within the platemark, so lower inscriptions may have originally been present, location: Baltimore Museum of Art, L.33.53.7160. no "imprimatur"; etcher's name at upper right; English title only; no lower inscriptions; no date, location: Washington University, St. Louis, MO. Since the restrikes duplicate the second state of this print, it is most likely that impressions of this variant state were pulled sometime before the plate was dated. It is possible that these two variant states may be the true first and second states of this print. However, this would be the first known case in which the English title was inserted first on a plate; since Vignette I was one of the earliest of the prints produced, well before any agreement was made for the English edition of Travels, this seems unlikely. source: KBA #19, Boston Lighthouse, watercolor on paper, 6 3/8" x 8 5/8". |
