Show Exercise Compiled by Jennifer Ha 2000 Total Utah Non-Exercisers: 15.5% Regular exercise and physical activity are vital components of a healthy lifestyle. People who engage in regular physical activity and healthy eating habits will gain benefits such as weight loss and disease control. Exercise helps protect against heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, non-insulin dependent diabetes, back pain, and osteoporosis. It also helps improve psychological well being by reducing anxiety and stress. Over the past three surveys, the percentage of physically active adults in Utah has been greater than the Mountain West region* and the United States. An analysis of respondent demographics reveals that race, income, and educational level somewhat influence a person's likelihood to participate in exercise and physical activities. Utah's 2010 goal is to increase the number of physically active adults by 30%. * Region includes: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. Table 56.
