Percentage of histologically confirmed local/regional malignant prostate cancer cases among white men in Utah and SEER (excluding Utah) by treatment and calendar year. amount of upstaging because of radical prostatectomy. In addition, the study was restricted to whites only because of the small percentage of nonwhites in Utah (approximately 5% during 1992-98) (U.S. Populations, 2001). The U.S. National Cancer Institute's computer program SEER*STAT 4.0 (2000) was used to obtain prostate cancer incidence and treatment data for the SEER areas. Results The percentage of cases undergoing radical prostatectomy decreased from 58% in 1992 to 39% in 1998 in Utah, whereas the percentage decreased only slightly from 38% in 1992 to 34% in 1998 in SEER (excluding Utah) (Figure 1). The percentage of cases receiving radiation therapy decreased only slightly and then increased gradually for both Utah and SEER (excluding Utah). For all years combined, the percentage of cases undergoing radical prostatectomy was 42% in Utah compared with 32% in SEER (excluding Utah). On the other hand, the percentage of cases receiving radiation therapy was 22% in Utah and 33% in SEER (excluding Utah). Higher percentages of cases undergoing radical prostatectomy in Utah compared with SEER (excluding Utah) occur across the age span (Figure 2). Similarly, lower percentages of cases receiving radiation therapy in Utah compared with SEER (excluding Utah) occur across the age span. Radical prostatectomy compared to radiation therapy is more frequently received by cases in Utah through age group 70-74 and in SEER (excluding Utah) through age group 65-69. When we look at percentages of radical prostatectomy and of radiation by specific registries and age groups, a higher percentage of cases undergo radical prostatectomy in Utah than in any of the other registries in the age groups 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 85+ (Table 1). Percentages of cases receiving radiation therapy are lower in Utah than in each of the other SEER registries for age groups 50-59, 60-69, and 70-79 years. Discussion This paper has identified prostate cancer cases in Utah as more likely to be treated with radical prostatectomy and less likely to receive radiation therapy than cases in SEER (excluding Utah).
