Show Homicide (ICD-9=E960-E978, ICD-10=X85-Y09, Y87.1) Compiled by Jacob Budd and Lars Peterson 2000 Utah Homicides: 52 Law enforcement agencies report homicides to the FBI, which tracks homicide rates. However, the most accurate data tend to come from death certificate records kept by the health department. This rate is combined with others to create the violent crime index, which is used as a measure of the comparative safety within an area. Not only have homicide rates dropped, but also the entire violent crime index has sharply fallen since 1991. Both the U.S. and Utah are experiencing homicide rates similar to those experienced during the 1960's. This represents a significant decline for the nation since the peak in 1980 and later in 1991. Since 1995, Utah has seen a slow decline in the homicide rate. Utah will probably continue fluctuating at this low rate of homicide. Continued vigilance by police agencies, improvement of neighborhood watch programs, and the work of mental health groups will continue to decrease homicide rates; however, there does appear to be a ten year cycle of homicide rate increase.
