Show Primary and Secondary Syphilis (ICD-9=091-092. ICD-10=A51) Compiled by Jennifer Ha 2000 Utah Incidence: 0.1 per 100,000 Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Treponema Pallidum. In its primary stage, the bacterium produces a painless sore on the infected patient. Those who go untreated will move into the secondary stage of the disease and experience rashes, hair loss, nausea, and weight loss. There has been a steady decline in the rate of primary and secondary syphilis throughout the United States. Current projects such as the National Plan to Eliminate Syphilis from the United States are concentrated on geographic areas with disproportionately high levels of syphilis. Table 31.
