Show Hepatitis A Compiled by Erin Maughan 2000 Utah Reported Cases: 71 Hepatitis A is a reportable disease, with incidence data collected through local state health departments and the National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System at CDC. Hepatitis A is a viral infection of the liver. It is usually passed via contaminated food or water, or from person-to-person contact, especially from infected children who often do not exhibit signs or symptoms of the disease. Risk factors of being infected with hepatitis include living in a western state, international travel, men having sex with men, or illegal drug use. Hepatitis A tends to be cyclic in nature. Utah currently ranks 5 th in the nation in the number of cases of Hepatitis A per 100,000 people (1987-1997). However, the number of cases of Hepatitis A declined dramatically in 1998 due to better hygiene habits, especially with food preparation and the natural cycle of Hepatitis A. Healthy People 2010 has a goal to target populations at high risk of Hepatitis A, and to bring the rate from 11.3 new cases per 100,000 people to 4.5 new cases per 100,000 people. One way to accomplish this goal was recommended by the National Table 34.
