Show Tobacco Compiled by Matt Horstmann, Kirt Slaugh, and Michael Thomas 2000 Utah Smokers (18 and older): 12.9% Tobacco is the single most preventable cause of death and disease in the United States. Most people begin using tobacco in early adolescence, typically by age 16; almost all first use occurs before high school graduation. Annually, tobacco use causes more than 430,000 deaths in the U.S., and costs the nation approximately $50 - $73 billion in direct medical expenses alone. In Utah, the average annual deaths from smoking are estimated to be more than 1,100 every year. These deaths account for a loss of more than 15,000 person life-years each year, or an estimated 13.4 years of life lost for every smoker. Smoking prevalence is strongly correlated to education and income. These are the most commonly used indicators of socioeconomic status. People in lower socioeconomic classes have proven to be most vulnerable to habits of tobacco usage. Reducing factors that lead to tobacco usage behavior in these social groups is the goal of several objectives of Healthy People 2010. Smoking in adult populations has decreased in the U.S. since 1996 and in Utah since 1998, after a general trend upwards during the early 1990's. Youth smoking trends followed a similar pattern. At least part of the recent downward trend can be attributed to increased social marketing against tobacco usage. "The Truth" campaign began in 1998, largely targets youth and young adult populations. Table 69. Percentage of Persons Reporting Current Cigarette Smoking Aged 18 and Older, Utah and U.S., 1990-2000.
