Show Section V. Chronic Diseases The Chronic Diseases Subsection of Utah's Health: An Annual Review presents information on the incidence of some common and debilitating diseases. With the aging of the population, both in Utah and nationally, chronic diseases have been receiving increased attention since their incidences generally rise with age. While some of these diseases are attributable to aging, others have preventable behavioral risk factors involved. For example, smoking contributes to lung cancer, heart disease, and cer-brovascular disease, and Utah's below average smoking rate is reflected in lower rates in these diseases. Being overweight also contributes to heart disease and diabetes mellitus. The Chronic Diseases Subsection of Utah's Health: An Annual Review is new to this year's volume. Many of the data pages were present in previous volumes, but the chronic diseases were not grouped together. Changes from pervious volumes include incorporating lung cancer by gender into the general lung cancer page and the addition of a renal transplant page.
