Show Cerebrovascular Disease (ICD-10 Codes: 160-169; ICD-9 Codes: 430-438) Compiled by Lars Peterson 1999 Utah Stroke Deaths: 869 Cerebrovascular disease, or stroke, is of concern to public health officials because it's major risk factor is easily monitored and treated. Uncontrolled high blood pressure is a key risk factor for many illnesses including cerebrovascular disease. Many people unknowingly suffer from high blood pressure (hypertension) since it manifests no outward symptoms. It is estimated that one in four adults in the U.S. has hypertension, and only one-third of these know it. The rate of mortality from cerebrovascular disease has been declining in both Utah and the nation since 1985. Utah has ranged from a high of 70.3 to a low of 56.9 cases per 100,000. Utah's rate is very comparable to the nation's, ranging from 1.05 to 0.92 over the last 15 years. There is no gender-based difference in cerebrovascular disease in Utah. Primary health care plays an important role in reducing morbidity and mortality from cerebrovascular disease by routine blood pressure screening. Unfortunately, the percentage of people reporting having had their blood pressure checked within the last 2 years has declined in Utah, and the nation, since 1991. Table 40.
