Show Drinking and Driving Compiled by Matt Horstmann and Dan Bergantz 2000 Utah Alcohol Related Traffic Fatalities: 89 Because of efforts from organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), drunk drivers now face far steeper penalties. For repeat offenders, mandatory jail time may be required. Utah, as well as other states, has passed Habitual Violator laws, which proscribe felony penalties for those with three DUI convictions. Others may permanently, or temporarily, lose their driving privileges. Utah en- forces one of the lowest Blood Alcohol Concentrations in the nation (BAC .08). Programs such as Cops-In-Shops have proven to be successful in the fight against drinking and driving. By means of this program, undercover police officers are randomly placed in stores that sell alcoholic beverages, thus helping to deter under-age youth from purchasing alcohol. The data here are limited, in that they do not show the high rates of injuries and fatalities that occur on the weekends. Table 64.
