Show Pneumonia and Influenza (ICD-9=480-487, ICD-10=J10-J18) Compiled by Lars Peterson 2000 Utah Pneumonia Deaths: 380 Over 60,000 people in the U.S. die each year from complications of pneumococcal disease and influenza. In both Utah and the U.S., these two diseases combined were the seventh leading cause of death from 1999 to 2000. From 1985 to 1998, Utah's rate of influenza and pneumonia ranged from 35 to 43 deaths per 100,000. This was consistently higher than nation's rate, which ranged 33 to 37. In 1999, there was a drop in pneumonia and influenza mortality rates in both the U.S. and Utah of approximately 10 per 100,000. Mortality from pneumonia and influenza is of concern to public health officials because vaccines exist for both diseases and many of these deaths are preventable. It is estimated the 85% of the deaths from influenza-related pneumonia could be prevented by use of the vaccine. People at high risk for pneumonia and influenza are age 65 or older, those with chronic pulmonary or cardiovascular disease, immunosuppresed individuals, and residents of assisted living facilities.
