Show Lung Cancer (ICD-9 Code: 160-165; ICD 10: C34) Compiled by Lars Peterson 2000 Utah Lung Cancer Deaths: 399 Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in Utah and the U.S. Additionally, smoking causes heart disease, damages lung function and raises blood pressure. Because symptoms of lung cancer often do not appear until the disease is advanced, early detection of this cancer is difficult. Utah's death rate from lung cancer has changed little over the past 20 years going from 24.2 in 1980 to 26.7 in 1999. The lung cancer mortality rate in Utah has consistently been less than half the national rate. From 1994 to 1998, Utah had the lowest average lung cancer mortality rate in the nation. While the rate of death from lung cancer in Utah men has come down to 1985 levels after rising to a high of 48.67 in 1993, the rate for Utah women has consistently increased. This upward trend is seen nationally as well. The rate for US men has gone from 75.6 in 1985 to 72.1 per 100,000 in 1998. During the same time frame, the rate for US women has increased 42% from 32.6 to 46.6. The rise in rate among Utah women is intriguing since the percent of women who identify themselves as smokers has dropped from 13% in 1990 to 11% in 2000. Table 35.
