Show Female Breast Cancer (ICD-9 Code: 174; ICD 10: C50) Compiled by Patricia Otiede, Lisa Pettey, and Matt Horstmann 2000 Utah Breast Cancer Mortality: 24 per 100,000 Breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in U.S. women. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among Utah women. Early stage detection can substantially reduce death rates caused by breast cancer. Clinical trials have demonstrated that routine screening with mammography can reduce breast cancer deaths by 20 to 30 percent in women aged 50 to 69 years and by about 17 percent in women aged 40 to 49 years. Utah experienced a sharp decline in breast cancer deaths from 1998- 1999, but saw a slight increase in occurrences in 2000. Utah averages approximately 5 less deaths per 100,000 women than the national average. That means that Utah has the third lowest breast cancer mortality rate in the United States. In recent years, Utah has taken several key steps towards fighting breast cancer. The 2000 Utah legislature approved a resolution encouraging private health insurance companies and employers to include insurance coverage for the screening and detection of breast, colorectal, and prostate cancers. The Utah Cancer Control Program (UCCP) provides free to low cost clinical breast exams and mammograms to women who meet age and income guidelines. In addition, the UCCP provides education about the need for early detection and the availability of screening Table 36.
