Show Diseases of the Heart (ICD-10 Codes: 100-152; ICD-9 Codes: 390-398, 402, 404-429) Compiled by Lars Peterson 1999 Utah Heart Disease Deaths: 2,828 Diseases of the heart include rheumatic heart disease, myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, hypertensive heart disease, and diseases of the valves and vessels connecting to the heart. Heart disease has been responsible for over 2,000 deaths a year in Utah over the last twenty years. Important risk factors to monitor in relation to heart disease are smoking, cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, having a family history of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. Incidence of heart disease has been steadily declining in both Utah and the nation since the 1980's. Utah's rate has declined faster than that of the nation falling from a high of 85% to 72% of the national rate. Utah males are consistently one and a half times more likely to die from heart disease than Utah females. Utah ranks lowest in the nation in the percentage of adults who smoke. This fact may help Utah maintain its lower than average heart disease rate. High cholesterol is also a major contributor to heart disease and Utah ranks behind the nation in percent of adults who report having had the cholesterol level checked. Table 38.
