Show Diabetes Mellitus (ICD-9 Code: 2501; ICD 10: E10-E14) Compiled by Laurie Johnson, Mike Thomas, and Neil Nokes 2000 Utah Diabetes Mortality: 36 per 100,000 Diabetes is a chronic disease that has no cure. Diabetes is the 7* leading cause of death in the United States and Utah. There are an estimated 16 million people in the United States and 50,000 people in Utah who have diabetes, 30% of whom are not diagnosed and thus go untreated (National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention & Health Promotion; Utah Diabetes Control Program). Medical costs and lost productivity because of diabetes is estimated to be $98 billion per year (National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention & Health Promotion; Diabetes). In 1989, Diabetes Mellitus mortality rates rose in both Utah and the United States due to changes in the death certificate procedure. Diabetes is underreported on death certificates. This underreporting led to a national change in death certificate procedures. A "Death Subgroup," was added which may have substantially contributed to the reported increase. The United States diabetes mortality rates continue to increase slightly, while Utah's rates have dramatically increased to a new high of 36.42 per 100,000 population in 2000. Compared with the female diabetes mortality rates, male rates have consistently been higher in Utah and the U.S. since 1989. The Utah Diabetes Control Program is currently working on: 1) a statewide diabetes surveillance system, 2) a Utah certification of diabetes self-management training programs, 3) a diabetes primary Table 43.
