Show Hospital Discharges by Major Diagnostic Category Compiled by Kris Atkinson, Jeff Olsen, and Gretchen Ratzlaff The following data demonstrate trends in hospital discharges for patients in Utah. Table 18 presents the number of hospital discharges by major diagnostic category (MDC) in 52 Utah hospitals from 1992-2000. Patients were categorized by MDC of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). These data are useful in recognizing trends in hospital discharges in Utah. For example, patients discharged after being treated for "Nervous System" diseases increased every year from 1992-2000, except 1998-1999. This upward trend may indicate influences such as improvement in diagnosis, better technology, or an overall increase in patients admitted to Utah hospitals. A large decrease was observed in hospital discharges for patients admitted with "Eye" diseases. There were 1,375 discharges in 1992 compared to 265 discharges in 2000. This may be due to increased out- patient treatment leading to less hospital utilization. If examined in conjunction with the previous page, these data are also useful to evaluate health care costs in Utah. For example, there were 2,945 "Infectious and Parasitic" hospital discharges with an average length of stay (LOS) of 6 days compared to 104 "human immunodeficiency virus infected" hospital discharges with an average LOS of 7 days in 2000. Despite their shorter LOS, "Infectious and Parasitic" patients used 17,641 patient days compared to 728 patient days for those infected with HIV. Therefore, by linking hospital discharge data with average LOS data, health policy programs could be formulated that emphasize preventive interventions for infectious and parasitic diseases. This may minimize hospitaliza-tions, and possibly save money. Table 18. Number of Hospital Discharges by Major Diagnostic Category, Utah, 1992-2000.
