Show Life Expectancy and All-Cause Mortality Compiled by Leanna VanKeuren, Lars Peterson, and Stephen Nelson 2000 Utah Total Deaths: 12,339 As shown in Table 1, life expectancy in Utah and the United States has steadily increased since 1970. During this period, the life expectancy of women has consistently been higher than that of men. The longer life expectancy for Utah males over their national counterparts correlates with lower smoking rates and overall healthier lifestyle in the state. However, life expectancy for Utah females is slightly below the national average. If this is a statistically significant difference, it may provide rationale for increased focus on women's health in Utah. Total mortality numbers provide a basis for analyzing the overall health of a population. Since this number includes natural causes, as well as disease, homicide, and death due to injury, it can provide an estimate on how public health is doing in totality. In the last fifteen years Utah's overall mortality rate has ranged from 85% to 91% of the national average (Table 13). The increase from 85% in 1990 to 91% in 1998 was due to a faster decrease in the national rate than Utah's, as opposed to an increase in Utah's rate. Utah males are dying at a considerably higher rate (250-300 more per 100,000) than Utah females. In addition, the highest mortality rate is seen in Southeastern Utah and the Uintah Basin (Table 14) which also have the highest proportions of Native Americans. Table 12.
