Show Fertility Compiled by Dan Bergantz 2000 Utah Fertility Rate: 90 per 1,000 Fertility rates and birth rates are highly correlated. Births rates are usually expressed in terms of the number of live births per 1,000 population, whereas fertility rates more specifically express the number of live births per 1,000 females 15-44 years of age. Utah has consistently had the highest fertility and birth rates in the nation. During the late nineteen seventies, Utah's fertility rate was almost twice that of the nation's rate. Since that time, Utah's fertility rate has steadily declined, but the U.S. rate has remained fairly stable. Regardless, Utah's fertility rate remains high above most other states. This is one of the reasons that Utah's rate of population growth continues to be about twice that of the nation. It also causes Utah to have a very young population, in fact, the youngest in the nation. This creates a challenge in caring for a large dependent population of children. However, Utahans are doing a very good job. According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation's National Composite Rank, Utah ranked third among states in child well-being in 2001, just behind New Hampshire and Minnesota. 140 -| 120 - 100 - cd 80 - CD a: 60 -40 -20 - 0 ¦Utah Table 45.
