Show Prostate Cancer (ICD-10 Code: C61 for 1999-2000; ICD-9 Codes: 185.0-185.9) Compiled by Trever Porter, Kirt Slaugh, and Brady Kirk 200 Utah Prostate Cancer Deaths: 165 Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer in men, excluding skin cancers. The recent declining trend in prostate cancer mortality rates experienced in Utah and the United States is therefore highly encouraging. From its peak of 14.3 in 1992, the U.S. prostate cancer mortality rate decreased 18% to 11.7 in 1999 at an average annual rate of 2.8%. Similarly, Utah's prostate cancer mortality rate dropped by 22.8% over the same time interval from 17.1 to 13.2 at an average annual rate of 3.3%. Recently, Utah experienced a substantial improvement in its prostate cancer mortality rate. From 1999 to 2000, the state mortality rate fell an additional 16%, dropping to an all-time low of 11.1. Although relevant data for the national rate is not presently available, such significant progress in Utah may narrow the 14.8% historical average gap between its rate and that of the nation. While the reason for the decrease experienced over the past decade in both the state and national mortality rate is unknown, improvements in the diagnosis of prostate cancer, including the introduction of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test in the late 1980s, may account for much of this improvement. Increased use of other screening methods may also have contributed to this decrease.1 1 National Cancer Institute.
