Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show 129 I , The ( Mormon Mornion ) settlements on the San ( Juan Xuan ) ( Elver Ri-ver River ) in the vicinity of Bluff in 1879 have ( an ail ) important * bearing upon the question of ( tlie the ) navigation ( in iii ) the ( San Sail ) Juan River . The ( settlements settlenients ) in the vicinity of Bluff were preceded by the comprehensive ( ex- ex ) ploration of the surrounding ( country coiintry ) , the year ( pre- pre ) vious to the settlement . The entire country was critically examined by the exploring party ( for foi ) the purpose of ascertaining the nature and ( extent extelit ) of the land which ( might iiiight ) be susceptible to ( fanning farming ) purposes . The exploring party also ( examined exalnined ) the country for the purpose of ( finding fh-iding fhiding ) a suitable route to bring in the settlers . ( See ( Knmen Kumen ) Jones , Tr . Vol . 3 , p . 363 . ) A settlement expedition ( was -was was ) organized at Cedar City and an appropriation secured from the Legis ¬ lature of 5,000 to build a road into the San Juan country . The church also made an appropriation for the same purpose . ( Page 5 , Exhibit 620 . ) The expedition had a boat ( which vhich ) was launched on the Colorado ( Kiver River ) in the neighborhood of ( Hole- Hole ) ( in-the-Rock intheRock hi-the-Rock hitheRock ) . It is recorded that the boat was ( stuck stuelc ) in some shallow rapids and it ( Avas vas ) neither possible to float down nor to row up the river and the boat Avas abandoned . ( Page 6 , Exhibit 620 . ) The difficulties encountered in building the ( road Toad ) , the character of the country traveled and the length of time it took to complete the journey are all ( re- re ) |
