In the flood of September , 1923 , hundreds of logs 20 to 30 feet long and 2 to 3 feet in diameter passed through Grand Canyon . Photograph No . 123 , Exhibit 77 , shows the large amount of drift being ( carried carfied ) by the Green River on October 12 , 1928 , during a small flood of ( 12,000 12,00-0 ) ( second-feet secondfeet ) ( page 6 , Exhibit 75 ) . Miser , in Water Supply Paper No . 538 ( page 55 , Exhibit 56 ) , in speaking of the San Juan River , says : " The floods during rising stage carry so much driftwood , ( in- in ) ( cluding eluding ) logs , as to make boating precarious , " and again on page 71 : ( la In ) fact the drift is so abundant that the river picks ( up iip ) enough fine trash , logs , and ( stumps stunips ) to cover much of the surface of the stream during rising stages . The drift ( con- con ) tains some green trees , but consists ( mostly -Luostly Luostly ) of seasoned wood , ( including indluding ) pine , pinon , cedar , and cottonwood . Some drift ( accumu- accumu ) lations are 15 to 20 feet in length , ( some sonie ) were noted as far as 35 feet above the water ( sur- sur ) face , and some occupy areas of several acres . |
