Show ( TTtah Vtah ) which lies east of 127 the Green and Colorado ( Elvers Rivers ) below the town of Greenriver , Utah , gave them a familiarity with the lands adjacent to the river . No Church record discloses that any of these sections of the river ( were -were were ) ever used by the Mormons as highways of travel . As early as 1853 a trading expedition proceeded from Santa ( Fe Pe ) , New ( Mexico Alexico ) , to Salt Lake City . The record of this expedition shows that it crossed the Grand River ( now the Colorado River ) ( alout about ) ( twenty-five twentyfive ) ( miles Y-niles Yniles ) below the mouth of the Dolores . They proceeded from this point and crossed the Green River near the present town of Greenriver , Utah . ( See pages 6 ( an"V anV ) , Exhibit 622 . ) In 1854 , at the direction of Governor Young , a party left Springville , Utah , to explore the ( south- south ) eastern part of ( "Utah Utah Utah ) . The travels of this ( expedi expedi- expedi ) tion necessitated the crossing of the Green , Grand ( now the Colorado ) , and San Juan rivers . The ( ob- ob ) ject of the expedition was to ascertain if ( southeast southeast- southeast ) ( ern em ) ( Utah T-Ttah TTtah ) contained any lands suitable for ( settle- settle ) ( ment mcht ) . Elder W . D . Huntington , in charge of the trip , reports upon the character of the land , the ( condi- condi ) tion of the roads , cliff dwellings , and other items of interest .
