Show April , 1893 ( R . 1920 ) , started 136 down the river ( on oil ) a ( trial fxial ) trip . Mr . Edwards was an experienced ( river- river ) man . In order to assist them in the operation of the boat ( on oil ) the return trip and upon other trips , Edwards ( made niade ) marks upon the canyon walls , to ( in- in ) dicate the points ( where Nvhere ) bad sand bars and other ( obstructions obsUuctions ) might be encountered ( R . ( vol -vol vol ) . 10 , p . 1919 ) . The boat ( was -was was ) equipped with a block and ( tackle taehle ) for the purpose of assisting it off sand bars by ( mak- mak ) ing a line fast to the shore . ( R . Vol . 10 , p . 1920 . ) The boat encountered numerous sand bars on ( tlie the ) down trip and finally reached a point about a ( quar quar- quar ) ter of a mile above the first rapid in Cataract ( Can- Can ) yon . At this point , the boat turned around and returned to ( Wheeler's Wheelers ) Ranch . The trip upstream was not quite as difficult as the one downstream , because in many cases the boat could be backed off the sand bars . ( R . Vol . 10 , p . 1921 . ) The boat was tied up at ( Wlieeler's Wlieelers ) Ranch , and no attempt was made to take it into the town of Greenriver , because , as described by ( Edwards Ed-wards Edwards ) he ( "did did ) not think it possible to get it ( the boat ) up there ; too much rock and water . " R . Vol A p . 1922 . A second trip was made down the river about ten days later and practically the same difficulties were encountered as upon the first ( trip tlip ) . Edwards testified ( R .
