( February Febtifdry ) 25,1890 , 2.30 p . m . Look ahead thinking we saw a , rapid . ( Wo We ) start at 2.38 and at 2.41 to see great rapid afiedd , and wfien we get to i1find only rolling . waves . ( Wiieri 'Wteh- Wteh ) ( ve' ve ) ( stopped sf6pp'e sf6ppe ) to ( look l6ok ) ( aliead dflea-d dflead ) at 2 ( '90'p 90p ) . ( m' m nI ) we thought we saw a ( bad bail ) rdpid ( aliead dhead ) on left side . When we got ahead . a : little ( on oift ) shore there was nothing in . sight but swift smooth ( water cater ) . We started ( aliead ahead ) again and ran 5 minutes when all three of us , Hislop , Travers , and myself , saw again a heavy rapid ( with witti ) ( break break- break ) ing ( wayes waves ) ahead . We ( land laud ) with great ( diffi- diffi ) culty ( and aild ) ( walk walh ) down the talus , but there is no ( rapid -vapid vapid ) . We walk ahead % mile to where the ( waves wa-ves waves ) are breaking , and , after studying them for some time , find that it is an immense body of water ( moving Daoving ) down the river from what we suppose to be a great ( cloudburst cloud-burst cloudburst ) above . We ( watch -watch watch ) them carefully and the waves rise up gradually as they move down the river to 12 to 15 feet high , and the whole width of the river ( 150 to 200 feet wide ) , and then break upstream just as a ( Iruge huge ) breaker at sea . A half dozen of these rise and roll , break with a great roar , and then they ( sub- sub ) side and the water settles down . The same movement is repeated a little distance ( down do-wn down ) ( and -and and ) then ( further fu'rthe'r further ) and further . ( Now No-w Now ) they |
