Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

( Channel Chaimel ) ( depths dept7ts ) & ( Glen Glan ) ( Canyon Canyoa ) . : ( 'Stanton's Stantons ) field notes ( Exhibit 176 ) records the following ( iin- iin ) of channel depths : December 10 , 1889 : * * * At about 2.15 we came to ( Trd- Trd ) chyte rapid ( 161 miles above Lees Ferry WGH * * * McDonald ) was entirely ( un- un ) decided which channel to take . * * * Started down the center channel . ( We AAIe ) had not gone more than 200 feet ( when vheii ) we ( com- com ) menced bumping on the rocks , and in a few moments we were stranded . Boats 2 and 3 were close behind us and went ( bumping- bumping bumping ) over the rocks , but did not stick . December 13 , 1889 : Just above California ( Bar BaT ) going over riffle ( Mile 130 WGH ) our boat and No . 2 swamped on the rocks . December 14 , 1889 : Today the water was so low ( "We We ) got ( through tlirough ) ( with 'with with ) great difficulty . No . ( 1 I ) ( went ivent ) ( through tbrough ) without touching , but No . 2 struck several times and No . 3 stuck on the rocks We , . then found a ( mess ness ) of shallow water formed by flat shelves of rock running across the river and downstream for half a mile . ( Mile 112 . ) We found the water so shallow that we could not get our boats through ( loaded- loaded ) ( made inade ) portage of 800 feet .
