Show IV. Disease Three components include a variety of chronic and acute diseases that measure the burden of disease and illness on the overall health of a population: heart disease, cancer cases, and infectious disease. Considering all disease components, Utah, Alaska, Colorado, and Minnesota rank the highest. New York and Florida rank the lowest in the nation. 1. Heart Disease Measures the death rate due to heart disease using a three-year average, adjusted by age and race. The effect of heart disease on health was measured using mortality data because of the improved accuracy of the data and the ability to adjust for age and race even though it may not reflect the full impact of heart disease. Ranks are based on the 1996-1998 data from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Utah Hawaii Alaska Mississippi United States 1 197.7 deaths per 100,000 population 1 182.8 deaths per 100,000 population 1 197.3 deaths per 100,000 population 50 350.6 deaths per 100,000 population - 276.2 deaths per 100,000 population 2. Cancer Cases Measures the impact of cancer on a state's population based on information from the American Cancer Society. The number of projected cancer cases for the current year is divided by the estimated total population of the state to determine the rate of cancer cases per 100,000 of the population. This component is not adjusted by age or race, so a part of the variation between states can be explained by differences in age of the population. Infectious Disease Includes the occurrence of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), tuberculosis, and all types of hepatitis as representative of all major infectious diseases in a state. The data represent a three-year average and is not adjusted for age or race. In addition, the individual state health departments report these diseases and the level of accuracy may differ from state to state.
