Show FACULTY HONORSThe following eleven faculty members have been selected by the Utonian as outstanding contributors in their various fields. Not only have they enriched and enlightened the lives of all students they work with, but their individual and collective efforts have helped to make the University a fine educational institution.Waldemer P. Read Ellis T. DemarsProfessor, Philosophy Professor, Educational AdministrationDr. Read is not only a highly respected faculty member, but he is considered to be a stimulating, informative, and provocative teacher. In teaching Dr. Read feels that the pursuit of philosophy by college students is "Freedom of the Mind." It is the development of the powers of thought, a certain dis-lodgement of preconceived and prejudiced thoughts that obstruct the minds of the less educated." According to Dr. Read philosophy provides a freedom from the "emotional attachments that prevent a rational functioning of the mind." During the period from 1948 to 1963, when he was chairman of the Philosophy Department, he instituted the Great Issues Forum, and delivered the William Reynolds Lecture in 1961, Dr. Read feels that Philosophy is a wonderful background for law, writing, and jobs in public service. Loved and respected by all who know him, Dr. Read has served the faculty of the University since 1930.Dr. E. T. Demars, professor in the department of educational administration, has been teaching at the University nineteen years. During his undergraduate work, he was voted student most likely to succeed in the field of engineering. Without a doubt, the Doctor did succeed, but in efforts directed toward the field of education. Why the change? "I got most of my enjoyment from working with and helping people. I decided teaching would provide me with an opportunity to do this." Dr. Demars has a varied background in educational administration, for he has been Dean of Boys at East High and Principal of South Summit High. Among his published works, Dr. Demars was responsible for the editing of Utah School Organization and Administration and the Writing of Educational Organization. |
