Show •ft* ^B 19 21 ONIAH University R. 0. T. C. Four years ago, the R. O. T. C. unit at the University was threatened with dismissal due to the fact that so few of the students were active in it. With the coming however of Major George S. Gay, a new spirit appeared and the interest in the unit has gradually increased until it became necessary at the past registration to limit the membership, due to lack of equipment. Last year Utah earned the rating of a Distinguished College of the United States, and things look very favorable for the same rating again this year. A greater interest shown by all of the male students of the school could make this department one of the finest in the country. This, we believe, will eventually come with the advent of Polo and other forms of attractive activity. In reviewing the year, we might say that the work has been very interesting under the instruction of the able officers who have been assigned to our institution. For those who do not participate in the work, it may be interesting to know primarily of what the work consists. In the first place the Freshmen year consists in the study of Material and Gunnery, as the Sophomore year approaches the work of detail is taken up including map making, calculating firing data, and special work such as the field telephone and driving draft. The Junior year may be said to consist of the higher mathematics in artillery direction and also horsemanship, to be followed in the Senior year with advanced riding, military law and courtesy, with these courses of instruction as a background and with one year of compulsory camp, reserve commission in the United States Army is obtainable. Next year under the direction of Captain Green, polo will be participated in by members of the R. O. T. C. Unit, several games having been scheduled with schools both on the coast and in the south. As each year passes by and plans for new ones are made, they are, in each case, more elaborate. It is the hope of every student who is interested in this line of work that the participation of the student body in it will gradually increase, thereby making our school second to none in military couurses offered by the government. i -g^ ______________aims------^mm ^^ »^-S' H 7L o m n tf 1/g 71 u m b e r\ |
