Show 19 21 UTONIA Don C. Lewis, Debating Coach Forensics The University debating squad had a very successful season this- year. Eight contests were won while but five were lost. Out of three triangular forensic meets, Utah was victorious in the state, and came second in the other two. Thirty debates were held, eighteen of which were conducted on the open forum, or Oxford plan. This type of debating is becoming more popular every year. The Utah women did remarkably well by winning three out of four decision contests by the unanimous votes of the judges. A women's state forensic triangle was held, then a team was sent through Wyoming and Colorado. Men debate teams carried the University colors to Oregon and California on the coast, and to surrounding states. Much interest was aroused by the questions which were discussed. Taxation and child labor problems were analyzed as well as the freedom in thought and action of the younger generation and its affect on society. The discussions on marriage laws and the Volstead Act were well received. The coming year should bring even better success in a forensic way. During the past season Coach Lewis, with but a few experienced men, built up a strong squad; next year most of the letter men will be back so a banner season can be looked forward to. : 232 o u n d Up 71 u m b e r |
