From information given by Ernest Bedont and Jack Stock SOFT8ALL Two softball leagues were in existence in 1934. The, teams participating were: Senior League: Midvale 2nd Ward, Ute Sentinel, P. C Rasmussen and the Business Men. Junior teams: Hicks League' Cleaning, Dan Radovich, Morrison Merrill and the Odd Fellows. Officials for the leagues were Kenneth Hand, Lyle Webster and Gene Weber. Midvale Smelter Athletic Association sponsored a softball team in 1936, and listed as its pitchers: Paul Mazuran and Danny Thurber; catcher, Jerry Erlen bach and Bill Landers championship season. and as was manager. This team won the undefeated during the 1937 . In June, 1937, Midvale Softball League was organized with O. D. Ballard director and the following teams: Monday League, Catholic Boys, Midvale tst Ward, Midvale 2nd Ward, Professional Men, Thursday. League, utah Poultry, Smelter (U.S.A.A.), Skaggs, Vincents. The Jordan District Softball Tournament was won in 1939, by the Midvale Boys with Veldon Larson, pitcher, and Jerry Erlenbach, catcher. SWI'MMING In the early days, the young people of Midvale had no place to swim except the "old swimming hole" in the Jordan River. In June, 1925, a tragedy was averted Gene Phelps saved Arthur Wadleigh from when in the river. Later that month, Gene and one of his friends requested the city fathers' aid in getting a swimming pool in Midvale. Many boys from this area took swimming instructions at Crystal Hot Lakes in Bluff dale under ausp'ces of the Jordan Council' of Boy Scouts, with Professor Walsh, U of U, instructor. In April, 1936, work was completed on the swimming' pool next to the city park and the opening was held on Memorial day of that year: In 1937, the municipal pool obtained a swimming in drowning structor. Webb was Utah state horse shoe pitching singles champion. L. Meyers was made president of the Fish and Game Ass'n. Frank Canning won 1st place in the 100 April, 1932 and 200 yard dashes to bring honors to Midvale Junior - - High. Alfred Canning placed 5th in the 440 yard dash and Marko Zrno won 2nd place in the shotput. Weldon Matthews was fullback November, 1932. and Frank LaComb was quarterback for BYU. - May, 1933, Dale Sorenson scored; 4044 and VerI Ferguson scored 3754 to win the, Senior and Junior division championships respectively of the Jordan District Pentathlon, Aaron Horne coached. In the Junior High track meet, Dale May, 1933 Sorenson won the 100· yard dash, Clarence Canning the 75 yard. dash" and Jack Canning: the 50 yar.d dash and Dan Thurber the 1f2 mile. Marjorie Howe won the 60 yard· dash for girls. Eric Youngberg won the broad jump, Reggie LeFevre the high, jump, Joe Petrlich the shotput and George Black and pole vault. July, 1933 Duane Bateman, 9, won 2nd place in the Peters Gildkoe rifle shoot, hitting 47 out of 50. May, 1934 Jack Canning-and Tim Miller of Midvale Junior High were pentathlon champions of the Jordan District meet held, in West .Jordan, Canning scored 3856 points to win the junior crown, and Miller' registered 3703 points for the senior title.
