"Pete" Peterson CHIEF LYLE READING Upon the resignation of chief "Roy" Steadman, Lyle Reading served briefly until December 31, 1941. He had been a patrolman for several years and remembers the pre-prohibition days and when Midvale had nine saloons, all busy. As a police officer, Lyle was called to investigate ten fatal accidents including the Jordan school bus tragedy. Patrolman were Niels Anderson and Clyde Pugmire. Lyle was born in Midvale, July 19, 1910, attended Jordan High School and the University of Utah. He married La Rene Aylett. Andrew Kekos and Michael D. Pavich. CHIEF WilLIAM H. GRANT was appointed chief of police from January 1 until April 30, 1952 when Marcell Graham resigned to become Warden of the State Penitentiary. He was supervisor for Bills Packing before becoming a police officer. He married Irene Told and they are the parents of Joan (Swain). William H. We grew from a three man police department to seven patrolmen while I was chief. I believe I am the only police officer in Utah that issued driver's licenses. Many people came from the south part of Salt Lake County to take their test and get a license from our department. We took care of the school crossing. He married Joan Levorsen and they are the parents of Melissa and Jolene (Mrs. Timothy Day). Mayor Henry Beckstead and the city council appoin ted him chief of police May 15, 1959; this is his twentieth year in that position. During his tenure as chief, the following new programs have been inaugurated: The Reserve Police Corps, K-9 Patrol, police dispatch system, developed a command system, property check for vacationers, detective division, alcohol safety action program.
