Show EARLY FAMILIES Church and The Year 1866 witnessed the arrival of a number of families who. settled partly below the hill by the Jordan River and some on the bench eastward in what was then to. Utah in 1868, sailing on the crossing the plains. Midvale, one block south of Center Street. Their children were: Christina, Anna, Ingri, Johanna, Sarah, Mary, James and Lean. The Nilsons took up a large piece of land that went Anna ami Johanna died while called West Jordan, Among these were the Scan dinavian families of Christian Hansen, Oka Olsen, Carl They settled Jensen, John Anderson, Neils Hansen, Lars Isakson, Isaac Withers and Andrew Hansen. Other families in cluded William Lathers, Sam Merritt, William Bennett and William Cooper. emigrated "Constitution." With their four little girls they joined a handcart company headed Ior the Salt Lake Valley. Ralph Jenkins, south from in what is near nQW Center Street to. what is nQW Wasatch Street and more land east of the railroad tracks south of they raised hay, potatoes, peas and grain. The peas were cut by hand with a scythe and loaded on a wagon, the hay was cut and raked into. mQWS with a hand rake. Once the grain was cut and tied the field was gleaned, even the broken into. Wasatch. On this farm CHRISTIAN AND ANNE HANSEN Christian Hansen was born in 1827 in Norway and married Anne Hanriksen in 1852. They were converts to. the LDS Church. All their property and belongings were sold at public auction and Christian and Anne walked a great distance to. Christinia (now Oslo), the capital of Norway. In 1866, they sailed from Hamburg, Germany and arrived in America in July. They traveled west ward by steamer and railroad to. Nebraska. Three days Hans later, Christian, Anne, their four children Christian, Martin, Eddely and Charles Michael headed across the plains in Captain Peter Nebeker's QX train, arriving in Salt Lake City in September. Their eldest SQn, Hans, who. had been ill during most of the journey, died the day after their arrival. Through the kindness of Harmon Cutler, he was buried in the Cutler Hill Cemetery. Mr. Cutler, with Alexander Dahl acting as inter preter, offered Christian work and the family moved to. Midvale. He spent the first winter making tools. They had been advised to. bring their own tools as they would be in short supply, so. Christian brought the steel parts bundles, heads that were dropped in the fields were gathered. family raised sheep, CQWS, pigs and chickens. The sheep were sheared each spring and Cecilia and the girls took care of the WQQl. Even the wool caught on fences and shrubs was gathered and used. The WQQI was washed clean, carded, spun into. yarn, woven into. cloth then dyed and made into. clothes for the family. This was typical of many pioneer families. The . - - of his tools with him. He also. made various tubs and butter molds of WQQd. He worked for Harmon Cutler in the building trade and also. hauled supplies to. the mines and machinery to. the smelter with ox team. In the spring of 1867, Harmon Cutler gave the Hansen family ten acres of land and helped them get logs and a home on the southeast corner of Main and Center Streets. In 1893, while hauling some heavy smelter machinery, he was killed when the machinery- lumber to. build rolled on him. Cecelia Nelson pioneer home with Anne Hansen had also. worked for the Cutler weaving cloth. She taught Mrs. Cutler how to.
