Show MID-FLORA GARDEN CLUB Chedwiggen, President Utah Associated Gar den Club, spoke to the Midvale Ladies' Community Club on flowers and shrubs and expressed the hope that a flower club could be organized in Midvale. A meeting was called in the old City Hall and representatives from various organizations attended. Those present were: Mrs Fred Hyke, Mrs Howard Phelps; Dr. Harold E. Nelson, Mrs John Aylett, Bern A. Rasmussen and Harry Grass. The group organized a garden club in 1936 at a public gathering of the citizens under the auspices of the Progressive Club, Harry Grass officiating. Mrs Chegwidden, N. A. Reynolds, President Utah Iris Society, and R. O. Kirkland, President Utah Rose Society, were in charge of the organizational meeting. Salt Lake Garden Club by-laws were read and accepted. Rose bushes, annuals, and bedding plants were given to those attending the first meeting furnished by the spon sors, Bowen Floral and Midvale Nursery. Object of this club was furthering city beautification. Mier, THE MELODETTES One of Midvale's most popular singing groups was the medodettes, a triple trio, under the direction of LaRue Barton Barfuss. Organized in 1955 they performed for many church and civic groups throughout the county. Club. ( Charter members: Mrs. George W. Cox, Mr and Mrs George W. Strom, Dr. Harold E. Nelson, Lyle D. Aylett, Hyke, Mrs. Leo Kemp, Mrs. William Thomas, Mrs. Joseph Belich. The first responsibility of the club was assisting with the County Farm Bureau Flower Show. To discourage vandalism and create an interest in beautifying the city, a Junior Garden Club was organized. Junior club flower shows were held at the schools. One of the first projects was that of landscaping the city park at the corner of Phelps, Mrs. Fred Main and Center. Bowen Floral donated shrubs and perennials. A tulip bulbs were planted. Contributors for this project, financially and physically, were Mid-Flora members, Midvale City, the Progressive Club, other civic organizations, local merchants and school thousand children. The Midvale cemetery was another fine project. Members helped remove the old wire fence which surrounded it and in April 1937 interior cemetery land , scaping was completed. It consisted of 20 horse chest nut and 36 green ash trees, 208 persian lilacs, and 70 trumpet vines. The lilacs were planted to surround the 'Midvale Melodettes. Barfus, director. cemetary and are still a beautiful sight. There were also 2,500 tulip bulbs 'added to the border.
