INTERVIEW: Salazar Page 22 know what was going with the kids when my son came home one day and he said, 'Mama there is a little gringito that is picking on me and one of these days I am going to punch him in the nose.' And I said, 'You are going to get into trouble.' And I said, 'You know in Laramie High they defend the white and the Chicanos always lose.' And he said, 'I don't care about that.' Well, he had three of the little friends and they let the hair grow, but Laramie High was against that and their button here, there was two buttons loose. They open their shirt collars like this and their belts down in the hips, you know, that was the style then. A year later everybody was wearing them even the girls. So anyway they got into a fight in school. He said that him and the two other kids were walking down the hall and this little Ackerman boy turned around and called them, 'There goes that spick.' So my son turned around and hit him, and he said, 'When we get out of school,' he says, 'We are going out in the bushes and I am going to give you.beaten you never had in your life. 1 He did. He beat him up. Well, when he beaten up they called the principal and the vice principal and they expelled my son from school. Well, he hadn't g ot home y et and I was washing when the principal called and he said, 'Your son is on the wa y home. He is expelled from Laramie Hi gh. 1 And I said, 'What seems to be the matter now?' And he said, 'Well, we don't tolerate kids fighting . ' I got ready to go to work and I told him to stay home.
