Show INTERVIEH: Edith Helendez Page 13 EM: the Mexicans because my husband is Puerto Rican and being that I've interpreted and helped quite a bit. Basically, of course, there is a lot of intermarriage now, there are several girls that have married Mexican boys and vice versa, but there is still kind of a dislike and distrust among ... in fact, I thin~ the Puerto Rican people are a lot more united than we as Mexicans. When someone gets killed or burnt they really kind of band together alot more than we do. GC: How did the Puerto Ricans and the Mexicans get along with the rest of the people, if you remember, or whether any other ethnic groups? EM: Well, in Bingham we had all ethnic groups, we had ethnic groups except blacks. We didn't have blacks, we had Chinese, Italians, Greeks all nationalities, and I think they got along good, don't you? BM: I kind of remember some kind of friction between the Anglos and the darker people. EM: Well, there was a kind of a dissatisfaction, and you had to ... all depends ... like I, myself was never discriminated too much because I never was the type that would sit back. I mean I was, we were always kind of fighters my family figured that to hell with them. Of course, my brothers all have done quite well. My brother, my oldest brother was a graduate of the university of Notre Dame and my other brother is a graduate |
