Show INTERVIE~f: Sa lazar Page 11 fact, I and my husband went down there in 1939, no it was before that, the first time we went we went in 1932 when the depression started to show up and then in the 1933 spring if we had breakfast we didn't have anything to eat all day long because we didn't .... there was no jobs. The depression was here already, and he went to work plowing ground with four horses, and that man worked from sun-up to sun-down for 50 cents a day of course 50 cents was a lot of money then you could go to the store and bring something to eat for three days for four people. That was the difference that he got the 50 cents and then in spring, after that, he left, he come in bumming, thumbing ride from Las Vegas, New Mexico here to Wheatland, Wyoming, and he worked on the beets so that he could make enough money to send to me to come horne. BM: To Wheatland? MS: To Wheatland. My folks were there, they had, well, they had, you know they didn't have their own horne, but lived there that was really hard. I tell you the depression was very hard. Well, some of my kids did know, well none of them did see the depression. My oldest boy was, when the depression started he was just a little bitty fellow, so really he doesn't remember anything about the depression. BM: How did you travel you mentioned one time you traveled on a coach. MS: A covered wagon? BM: Yeah, a covered wagon. |
