Show INTERVIE\-7: Edith Ne lendez Page 12 EM: They didn't like it here, they hated it. GC: Was it just the weather? EM: The weather, and was, they didn't like the work, they weren't used to doing this kind of work see, and Puerto Rico is a tropical country and here was a mining town, and they didn't like it and then, of course, it was a lot different from their way of living. Some of them went back to New York, Chicago, or California, very few stayed. GC: What was the social aspect, did they get along with the Mexicans? EM: No, there was quite open friction between the Mexican and the Puerto Ricans. They didn't like each other very well. GC: Any reason? EM: Well, even in Bingham the people from New Mexico and the people from Mexico didn't like each other very well either. So it was a dislike, a barrier because of the location, you know, the people from Mexico would call the people from New Mexico 'manitos' and the people from New Mexico would call the people from Nexico 'surumatos', you know. There was quite an open friction. GC: Do you remember how long this friction continued or is it even going on now? EM: I think there is more unity now, but I think it lasted most of the time.
