Show Kidney Transplantation (ICD-9 Code: 571; ICD 10: K70, K73-74) Compiled by Romel Mackelprang 1999 Utah Kidney Transplants: 161 Since the first successful kidney transplant in 1954, technology has been greatly enhanced and survival rates are much higher. Tracking transplant data helps to monitor and evaluate the current methods of organ procurement. There has been steady growth of organ transplants in the U.S., and accelerating growth in Utah over the past several years. This is due to increased awareness and demand. Due to the continual increase in the number of people on the waiting list and the stagnant growth in the supply, much debate has been raised over formulating a method to increase supply. Many kidney donations are from living relatives. Thus, as the demand grows the supply will grow as well because people are generally more willing to donate an organ to a relative. Living-related donations have grown rapidly over the past several years. However, much concern is given to the of cadaveric transplants. This concern is being met with programs to increase public awareness about the shortage in hopes that we will see an increase in the organ sup- piy. Table 44. There are 11 U.S. transplant regions. Utah is in region 5 with California, Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada. 2000 -j 1800 - 1600 - 1400 - 1200 - 1000 - 800 - 600 - 400 - 200 - 0 ¦Utah ----------Region 5 1990 1992 1994 Year 1996 1998 Figure 31.
