Show 3462 Lint- D 1485 testified to? MR. BLACKMAR: It is one of the trips which he testified to, not the one which started at Greenriver, Wyoming. THE SPECIAL MASTER: It is one he testified to? MR. BLACKMAR: Yes sir. THE SPECIAL MASTER: Then I don't think we need to go into very great detail on this, because Mr. Kolb testified pretty thoroughly. A The rapids were looked over before the boats were run. Drift was thrown in at the head of the rapids, to pick out the best channel through the rocks, and by very careful work we were able to get to the last rapid in the canyon without smashing up a boat. At the last -- I believe it was the last rapid -- next to the last one -- Emory Kolb was running one of the boats through, and he ran on a rock. The boat was there approximately two days; had to throw a line out to him, a small line, had a big rope ashore; built a tripod, put the rope over it, rigged up sort of a pulley, and got all the equipment off the boat. It took us all the next day then, to get the boat off the rock. Q Did you run all rapids, or did you portage some of them? A As I remember, we didn't portage any of the rapids in Cataract canyon; but I wouldn't say for sure. |
