Show 3450 Lint- D 1473 When we left the river they were still on Bull Frog creek, coming down; they went down the river right after we went out. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Just a minute. What did you do when you met the sand waves? A Well, when we couldn't miss them, we would try to turn the boat parallel to the waves, and ride it through that way. Float down sideways? A Yes sir. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q As I understand a sand wave, you can not hit it head on? A You can, yes. Q What do you encounter when you hit them head on? A It is hard to tell; with an open boat you would probably lose everything you had. Q You have been through water waves? A Yes sir. Q As I Understand, in hitting a water wave you hit them head on? A With a decked- over boat we generally did; with an open boat we tried to get around what we could; if we couldn't, we hit them head on -- or backed into them, rather. Q What is the difference in effect on a boat of a sand wave and water wave, in its operation? A A regular water wave will break upstream; they are sharp; a sand wave will keep polling. |
