Show 3456 Lint- D 1479 mouth of the San Rafael, tell me what difficulties, if any, you had. A As I said before, we tried the boats tandem; they wouldn't work that way, so we tied them side by side; the boat with the motor on was tied in the middle, then the whole crew scattered around on the deck. Before we got to the mouth of the San Rafael we hit a few shoals, few small sand waves, and we had to keep one man on the lookout for channels, and the river had just gone down. Q What date did you leave Greenriver? A It was approximately the middle of September; lots of shoals in there then, after this high water deposited lots of sediment, new bars; at the mouth of the streams coming in rocks had been washed in; on account of the sediment in the water we couldn't see the bottom. Q Was it necessary any place in that stretch of the river for anybody to go overboard and help push the boats along? A Yes sir. Q How many times did that occur? A I wouldn't say as to exactly how many times, but it occurred several times. Q From the mouth of the San Rafael down to the end of Labyrinth canyon did you encounter any difficulties in the operation of the boat? |
