Show 1 14 N WM THE PEN ?The University Pen, literary magazine, appearing quarterly upon the campus, suffered this year because of a dearth of contributions. As the year progressed, q greater amount of material was handed in, and as a result, the Pen improved perceptibly. The pleasing simpleness of cover design, the neatness of type and make-up greatly enhanced the magazine's appearance. The poetry and prose, on the whole, compared favorably with the material found in magazines of former years in treatment, point of view, and choice of subject matter. ?The first issue of the Pen, dedicated to "Hello Week" as the "Hello Number," was marked by two distinctly opposite moods-that of the realist and that of the romanticist. The matter varied from a discussion of the intelligentsia to a description of a deserted town. The second edition of the Pen introduced the novel "Pen Points" with its pertinent remarks about the contributors. The articles were notable for their attempt to escape the sordidness of everyday life and for a disregard of local color. The final issue, the Gleam-Scribbler Contest Number, sponsored by Chi Delta Phi and Sigma Upsilon, national honorary literary societies, presented the choice manuscripts of the contest.
