Show Captain Bill Kinner ? Captain William Kinner-"Spindly Bill" to the press world-gracefully maneuvered his six-foot-four-inches to the worry of opposing pivot men and coaches in his second collegiate campaign. ? Few centers out-leaped the lanky Ute and fewer still met the challenge of his scoring eye. Kinner has led all scorers for two seasons, thereby establishing himself as one of the greatest basketeers to cavort for an R.M.C. aggregation. BASKETBALL ? Utah U wrote a comparatively successful hoop season into her annals for the '33-'34 campaign, gaining a tie for second place in the Western Division R.M.C. standing with U.A.C.. "Due to the lack of harmony between Captain Grant Bennion and Coach Vadal Peterson the former failed to report when the initial call was made for squad try-outs. Bill Kinner, sensational frosh center of last year's varsity quint, who was also the only returning regular, was elected to fill the vacancy. ? After several days of drills in fundamentals the squad of candidates was cut to twenty-five men. This group engaged, in their first games, Granite Mart and Westminster College. All men were used as the Mart downed the varsity 37-32 and the reserves defeated the Parsons 39-29. Richins, Kinner, Ed Erek-son, and Mecham sparkled in the main encounter, while Alma Erekson and Dave Clegg shone for the reserves. ? Other games with Stanford at Salt Lake, Ogden Boosters, California at Berkeley, Stanford at Palo Alto, and some local independent quints supplied the pre-season seasoning. ? Further squad cuts and "walk-outs" reduced the aspirants to about three quints which "stuck-out" the season. ? Peterson's custom of grooming freshmen candidates in preference to upper classmen, although it disparages the advantages of more experienced men, adds vigor, cooperation, and possibilities for built-up teams in future years. ?
